I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over the unacceptable delay in swearing in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva to the U.S. House of Representatives. This deliberate obstruction of the democratic process is not only a disservice to the over 800,000 Arizonans in the 7th District but also sets a dangerous precedent for our nation's electoral integrity.
Rep.-elect Grijalva won her special election by an overwhelming margin of 42.9 points, clearly demonstrating the will of her constituents. Yet, House Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to administer her oath of office, citing the government shutdown and absence of other House members as excuses. These justifications ring hollow when considering the critical nature of congressional representation.
The implications of this delay are severe. Without being sworn in, Rep.-elect Grijalva is unable to access her office, hire staff, or represent her constituents' interests in Congress. This leaves a significant portion of Arizona's population without a voice in our nation's capital during a time of governmental crisis.
There are troubling suspicions that this delay may be politically motivated, potentially linked to Rep.-elect Grijalva's intention to sign a discharge petition for the release of Jeffrey Epstein case files. If true, this would represent a grave abuse of power and a betrayal of public trust.
The longer this situation persists, the more it appears to be a calculated move to silence a duly elected representative and obstruct transparency. This behavior is unbecoming of our democratic institutions and must not be tolerated.
I urge you to take immediate action to ensure Rep.-elect Grijalva is sworn in without further delay. The integrity of our electoral system and the right of constituents to be represented are at stake. We need leaders who will uphold democratic principles, not undermine them for political gain.
Demand that Speaker Johnson fulfill his constitutional duty and administer the oath of office to Rep.-elect Grijalva immediately. The people of Arizona's 7th District deserve nothing less than full and fair representation in Congress.
