Oppose the DHS funding bill and rein in unlawful ICE actions
To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in La Grange, TX
January 25
I am writing to urge you to oppose the DHS funding bill that just passed the House.
This bill rewards failure and excuses conduct that violates the Constitution. ICE agents have repeatedly engaged in actions that cross clear legal lines, including warrantless detentions, intimidation of lawful protesters, interference with due process, and actions that chill First and Fourth Amendment rights. Funding DHS without firm, enforceable limits signals congressional approval of these abuses.
Congress has a duty to fund agencies that follow the law, not agencies that test how far they can go before someone stops them. If federal officers are detaining people without proper warrants, using force to suppress lawful assembly, or operating with no meaningful oversight, the response should be accountability, not a blank check.
Supporting this bill would mean endorsing a model of enforcement where constitutional rights become optional. That is not conservative, and it is not lawful. Limited government means law-bound government, especially when it comes to armed federal agents exercising power over civilians.
I expect you to oppose this bill and to publicly demand strict oversight, clear statutory limits, and real consequences for DHS and ICE when the law is violated. Silence or procedural support will be taken as approval.
The rule of law matters only if Congress is willing to enforce it.
