I am writing to urge you to publicly call for the impeachment of President Trump, Vice President Vance, Secretary Noem, and Stephen Miller for their roles in authorizing and overseeing immigration enforcement actions that have resulted in the death of American citizens and the separation of young children from their families. On a recent date, ICE agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, during a protest in Minneapolis. This killing of an American citizen by federal agents exercising immigration enforcement authority represents a fundamental breakdown in the rule of law. Additionally, children as young as 5 years old are being separated from their parents at the border under policies directed by this administration. These are not isolated incidents but part of a systematic pattern of brutality that Cardinal Joseph Tobin of the Archdiocese of Newark has characterized as a "machinery of death." Cardinal Tobin, one of Pope Leo XIV's closest American allies, took the unprecedented step of calling ICE a "lawless organization" and urging Catholics to contact lawmakers to defund the agency. This marks the first time an American cardinal has directly called for defunding a federal agency. He was joined by Cardinals Blase Cupich of Chicago and Robert McElroy of Washington in a rare joint statement on January 19 questioning this administration's policies. Last summer, Tobin and 19 other Catholic bishops opposed Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," warning that its mass deportation funding and cuts to aid for the poor betrayed fundamental moral values. When federal agents kill American citizens in the streets and children are torn from their parents under color of law, impeachment is the constitutional remedy. Stephen Miller, the architect of these policies, has built a system designed to inflict maximum cruelty on vulnerable families while endangering the lives of our own citizens. I ask you to use your platform as governor to demand accountability from Congress and call for the immediate impeachment of Trump, Vance, Noem, and Miller for authorizing these actions.
