The sweeping actions taken by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to access and potentially compromise critical federal systems like those at the Treasury Department, Office of Personnel Management, and Department of Veterans Affairs are egregious violations of longstanding security protocols. Granting unvetted private individuals administrative privileges to systems housing sensitive data on millions of Americans, including veterans, is unprecedented and enormously concerning from a cybersecurity perspective. This action compromises the well-being and quality of life of veterans who rely on these systems for services and benefits. Congress must conduct rigorous oversight to protect the integrity of these vital networks and data. Immediate steps should be taken to audit all systems potentially accessed by DOGE representatives, revoke unauthorized access, and mitigate any vulnerabilities exploited. We cannot allow reckless actions that flaunt cybersecurity best practices and open the door to data breaches or disrupt essential government operations relied upon by the public, including veterans.
