The Supreme Court has diverged from 157 years of settled law concerning birthright citizenship. Unbelievably, a 6-9 majority has cleared the way for the Trump administration to deport people who were born in the United States or naturalized citizens. If the 14th Amendment is open to this egregious interpretation, then it needs reinforcement in the form of one or more new laws. Please begin drafting legislation to protect individuals who should be, but now somehow are not, ineligible for deportation. Given the administration's determination to violate civil rights at whim, the legislation had also better ban internment camps, suspensions of habeas corpus, and administrative diappearings. Please act quickly to stop our devastating slide into authoritarianism.
