I am writing to urge you to launch an immediate Senate investigation into the egregious waste of $533 million in taxpayer funds by the U.S. Army and General Dynamics at an artillery factory in Mesquite, Texas. As reported today by ProPublica, General Dynamics was awarded lucrative, non-competitive government contracts to build a state-of-the-art 155 mm artillery shell plant. Despite receiving $533 million from taxpayers, the facility suffered from constant equipment fires, severe safety hazards, and mechanical failures, ultimately failing to deliver a single usable artillery shell. Despite this total failure: No money has been clawed back: The Army has not recovered a single dollar from General Dynamics or held its sub-contractors accountable. Continued awards: General Dynamics continues to hold the contract and has since received billions more in taxpayer-funded military contracts. Lack of transparency: Official reports have masked corporate accountability while tax dollars remain unaccounted for. Taxpayers deserve full accountability and stewardship of defense spending. I strongly urge you to call for formal hearings, demand a full audit of this project, and push for the recovery of taxpayer funds from General Dynamics.
