I am writing as your constituent to demand your firm and public opposition to House Joint Resolution 29, introduced by Rep. Andy Ogles on January 23, 2025. This resolution would amend the Constitution to allow a president to be elected up to three times. This is verified and documented at congress.gov.
This is not a partisan matter. This is about the survival of American democracy.
The 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 as a direct response to the dangers of unchecked executive power. It is a firewall built from hard-won wisdom. H.J.Res.29 is designed to tear that firewall down.
Make no mistake about who benefits. This resolution is written so that Obama, Bush, and Clinton remain barred from a third term. Only President Trump would benefit. If that does not alarm you, it should.
President Trump has already told NBC News that there are methods for him to serve a third term. H.J.Res.29 is the legislative infrastructure being built to make that happen. Legal scholars have called the constitutional arguments behind it implausible and a defeat of the clear intent of the amendment.
I am asking you to do four things:
1. Publicly oppose H.J.Res.29 on the record.
2. Co-sponsor or vocally support legislation reaffirming the 22nd Amendment as written.
3. Use every procedural tool at your disposal to block this resolution in committee.
4. Speak publicly to your constituents about what is at stake.
Your oath was to the Constitution, not to any president or party. History is watching. Future generations will inherit what you do or fail to do right now.
Do not be on the wrong side of this moment.
I respectfully request a written response stating your position on H.J.Res.29.
Sincerely
