Amend SAVE Act to protect voting rights of married women
To: Rep. Stauber
From: A constituent in Forest Lake, MN
April 5
The right to vote is a fundamental pillar of democracy, and any legislation that potentially restricts or disenfranchises eligible voters should be scrutinized and amended. The proposed SAVE Act, while aiming to safeguard election integrity, poses a significant burden on millions of married women who have changed their legal names due to marriage or divorce. Requiring these women to produce birth certificates that no longer match their current legal names creates an unnecessary and discriminatory hurdle to exercising their constitutional right to vote. This disproportionately affects a specific demographic and undermines the principles of equal access and representation that our electoral system is built upon. It is imperative that measures be taken to protect the voting rights of all eligible citizens, regardless of their marital status or name changes. Robust protections and alternative verification methods should be implemented to ensure that married women, who comprise a substantial portion of the electorate, are not disenfranchised by overly restrictive identification requirements. The integrity of our elections is undoubtedly crucial, but it should not come at the cost of disenfranchising millions of law-abiding citizens. We urge you to amend the SAVE Act to address these concerns and uphold the fundamental right to vote for all eligible Americans, including married women who have changed their names.
