An Open Letter

I am writing as your constituent to respectfully urge you to withdraw your co‑sponsorship of H.R. 1041: the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act.
While I understand the stated intent of the bill, I am deeply concerned that it would weaken essential safeguards designed to protect veterans who are experiencing serious mental‑health challenges. Current law requires additional review when a veteran is found unable to manage their own VA benefits due to significant cognitive or psychological impairment. This process is not automatic, and it exists to prevent tragedies—both for the veteran and for those around them.
Removing these protections without creating a stronger, evidence‑based alternative puts vulnerable veterans at risk. Many veterans face PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, depression, and other conditions that can impair judgment or increase the risk of self‑harm. The answer is not to eliminate safeguards, but to strengthen mental‑health support, improve due‑process procedures, and ensure that decisions are made carefully and individually.
I am asking you to reconsider your position and withdraw your co‑sponsorship of H.R. 1041. Veterans deserve robust mental‑health care, thoughtful policy, and protections that reflect the realities they face—not legislation that removes guardrails without replacing them with something better.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to seeing you support policies that prioritize both veterans’ rights and their safety.
