The proposed legislation allowing the sale of public lands in the West, including large sections of Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, Mount Lemmon, Madera Canyon, and parts of Mount Graham, is deeply concerning. These cherished natural areas are not only vital outdoor recreation spots for Tucsonans, but they also contribute significantly to our local economy and quality of life. Selling them off threatens to deprive the public of access and could lead to exploitation by wealthy individuals seeking to build private estates. While addressing the nation's housing shortage is a valid goal, this bill takes an overly broad approach that fails to ensure any housing built would actually be affordable. Without specific safeguards, it risks becoming a giveaway to billionaires looking to expand existing large properties rather than a genuine solution. There must be a better way to promote affordable housing development that doesn't sacrifice our precious public lands. I urge you to oppose this legislation and protect iconic natural areas like Sabino Canyon from being sold to the highest bidder. These lands belong to all Americans and must be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Please prioritize securing long-term public access and responsible stewardship over potential privatization that benefits only the wealthy few. Our community's voice and values should take precedence in determining the fate of the lands we cherish.
