I am a Wyoming constituent asking you to oppose any effort to sell federally held student loans to private companies and to support a 0% interest rate on federal student debt.
Privatizing this debt would turn an already difficult situation into a crisis. Private lenders are required to maximize profit, so we can expect harsher collections, more fees, less flexibility in hardship, and more families driven into default, wage garnishment, and long term financial instability. Student debt already follows borrowers for decades. Handing it to Wall Street would lock in a lifetime burden for many of us.
The federal government should invest in the education of its citizens, strengthening the workforce and future tax base, not profit from people who sought degrees to contribute more to this country. Education financing should be a public commitment, not a profit stream.
Please clearly oppose any privatization of federal student loans and support legislation that moves federal student loans to 0% interest. You are a representative of the people of Wyoming, not Wall Street, and I expect you to act accordingly.
