Demand Immediate Swearing-In of Rep.-Elect Adelita Grijalva

To: Sen. Johnson, Sen. Baldwin, Rep. Moore

From: A constituent in Milwaukee, WI

October 28, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern over the ongoing delay in swearing in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, who won the special election to succeed her late father, Raúl Grijalva, over three weeks ago. This deliberate obstruction by Speaker Mike Johnson is a clear violation of democratic principles and the will of the voters in Arizona's 7th Congressional District. The refusal to seat a duly elected representative is not just a political maneuver; it's an affront to our democratic process. Rep.-elect Grijalva has rightfully won her seat, and every day she is prevented from assuming her duties is a day her constituents lack full representation in Congress. This is particularly egregious given that the House has not taken a floor vote in nearly a month. Speaker Johnson's dismissal of legal threats from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes as a "publicity stunt" is both disrespectful and shortsighted. His stance that he will only swear in Grijalva when the House returns from its extended recess, contingent on Senate Democrats supporting House-passed legislation to end the government shutdown, is an unacceptable quid pro quo that holds democratic representation hostage to partisan demands. I urge you to take immediate action to ensure Rep.-elect Grijalva is sworn in during the upcoming House pro forma session. The Speaker's attempt to link this constitutional duty to unrelated legislative negotiations is a dangerous precedent that undermines the integrity of our electoral system. Furthermore, I request that you publicly condemn this obstructionist tactic and work across party lines to uphold the fundamental right of constituents to be represented by their chosen elected official. The longer this situation persists, the more damage is done to public trust in our democratic institutions. Time is of the essence. Every moment Rep.-elect Grijalva is kept from her seat is a moment her district lacks a voice in crucial national debates. I implore you to act now to rectify this injustice and ensure that the will of the voters is respected without further delay.
