Demand Accountability for DOGE and the Misuse of Taxpayer Resources

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

October 28

I am outraged by the recent WIRED investigation into DOGE’s role in dismantling USAID. How was a 28 year old DOGE operative able to exercise sweeping authority over a federal agency when its own human resources department reportedly had no record of him working there? Elon Musk and his DOGE associates were allowed to access sensitive government systems, disrupt federal agencies, and make decisions affecting federal employees and critical programs. Russell Vought, Scott Kupor, and this administration must answer serious questions about their roles in these actions. Who authorized access to sensitive government information? Were federal laws followed? Were Americans’ private information and taxpayer dollars adequately protected? If individuals accessed government information without proper authorization or violated federal law, they must be investigated and held accountable. Anyone who broke the law should face appropriate legal consequences, regardless of wealth, political connections, or proximity to the president. These are taxpayer funded institutions, not the personal property of Elon Musk, Russell Vought, or Donald Trump. Our government does not belong to a handful of wealthy individuals who believe they can disregard established procedures and dismantle public institutions without consequences. I am equally frustrated by members of Congress who remain silent while these questions go unanswered. Congressional oversight is your constitutional responsibility. You must demand records, support independent investigations, protect Americans’ personal information, and ensure that credible allegations of wrongdoing are referred to the appropriate authorities. Congressman, whose side are you on? The side of wealthy and politically connected individuals who believe the rules do not apply to them, or the side of the American people who pay the bills and expect their government to operate lawfully? If you expect to retain the trust of your constituents, you must stand up for the American people. Silence in the face of serious allegations undermines public trust and allows potential misconduct to go unchallenged. I expect you to demand answers, pursue meaningful accountability, and defend the public interest. The American people deserve a government that serves them, protects their information, and respects the law. No administration should be allowed to treat our institutions and taxpayer dollars as its personal playground.
