Pledge Support for Transgender Rights During Awareness Week

To: Sen. Nesbitt, Gov. Whitmer, Rep. Andrews

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

November 14

As we observe Transgender Awareness Week from November 13-19, I urge you to take concrete action in support of transgender rights and safety. This annual observance, leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, is a crucial time to address the challenges faced by the transgender community and to commit to meaningful change. The theme for this year's Transgender Day of Remembrance is "Lives Remembered, Futures Reclaimed," highlighting the urgent need to combat anti-trans violence and discrimination. I ask that you use your position to advocate for policies that protect transgender individuals and promote their full inclusion in society. Specifically, I request that you: 1. Support comprehensive non-discrimination legislation that explicitly includes gender identity and expression. 2. Advocate for improved access to healthcare for transgender individuals, including coverage for gender-affirming care. 3. Push for enhanced data collection on hate crimes against transgender people to better inform policy decisions. 4. Promote educational initiatives in schools and workplaces to increase understanding and acceptance of transgender individuals. While Transgender Awareness Week is an important focal point, the need for support extends far beyond these seven days. I urge you to make a year-round commitment to educating yourself and your colleagues on transgender issues, amplifying trans voices in policy discussions, and being a visible ally to the transgender community. By taking these steps, you can play a crucial role in creating a safer, more inclusive society for transgender individuals. Your actions can help transform the theme of "Futures Reclaimed" from an aspiration into a reality for many in our community. I look forward to seeing your pledge of support translated into tangible actions that will make a real difference in the lives of transgender people.
