Public school funding should not go to charter schools
To: Gov. Reynolds, Rep. Larson, Sen. Kraayenbrink
From: A constituent in Pocahontas, IA
February 7
I am writing as a concerned Iowa resident to express my opposition to the proposed legislation that would provide equal state funding per pupil for public charter schools and traditional public school districts. While I understand the desire to increase educational choice and support innovation, I believe this funding shift would undermine our public education system and harm the majority of Iowa’s students. I oppose this proposal for the following reasons: 1. Diverts Critical Funding from Traditional Public Schools Public education in Iowa already faces significant financial pressures due to rising costs and inflation-related challenges. Redirecting funds to charter schools – particularly at a time when many school districts are struggling to balance budgets without cutting programs – would worsen these pressures and dilute resources that are essential for maintaining classroom sizes, teacher salaries, and core educational services. 2. Reduces Accountability and Oversight Charter schools often operate with less oversight than traditional public schools. Ensuring taxpayer dollars support educational environments that are transparent, accountable, and accountable to all students — including those with special needs — is crucial. Without strict accountability, there is an increased risk that public funds will be used without yielding demonstrable, equitable educational outcomes. 3. Creates Uncertainty for Rural and Smaller Communities Many rural Iowa districts have limited classrooms, tight staffing, and few alternatives in their communities. Diverting funds away from these districts to charter schools (which tend to be located in urban areas) could disproportionately harm rural schools that are already working hard to retain students and teachers. 4. We Should First Fix Public Education Before Spending More Elsewhere Instead of increasing funding for charter schools, Iowa should prioritize investing in its existing public education system — including teacher pay, special education services, mental health supports, and infrastructure — all of which directly support the success of Iowa’s students and families. For these reasons, I urge you to reconsider the proposal to equalize charter school funding with traditional public schools. I believe our state’s focus should be on ensuring strong, well-funded public schools that serve every student fairly and effectively. Thank you for your time and attention to this important issue. I appreciate your service to the people of Iowa and hope you will represent the interests of Iowa’s students, families, and educators in your decision-making.
