Support Citizen-Led Digital Democracy Tools Like Taiwan's vTaiwan
To: Rep. Johnson
From: A constituent in Dallas, TX
April 17
I'm asking you to champion digital democracy platforms that give constituents real power in shaping legislation, following Taiwan's proven model.
Taiwan's vTaiwan platform has turned 80% of its deliberations into decisive government action since 2015, with 200,000 citizens participating by 2020. The platform uses Polis technology to build consensus across divided groups by preventing trolling, clustering similar viewpoints, and surfacing statements that bridge ideological divides. When Uber entered Taiwan's market in 2015, vTaiwan transformed a bitter fight between taxi drivers and tech advocates into consensus around fair regulation and level playing fields. The government then enacted those recommendations.
This isn't theoretical. Finland just launched its own version in September, and Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs is now using Polis to let citizens shape AI safety policy directly. The technology works because it gamifies consensus-building rather than rewarding the loudest voices.
We need platforms that let constituents deliberate on complex issues and produce actionable recommendations you can turn into legislation. I want you to explore implementing similar technology for our district and co-sponsor any legislation that funds digital democracy infrastructure. Real participation beats performative town halls.
