Restore Hate Crime Grants at DOJ, Hold Hearings, Demand Answers

Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you in the strongest possible terms to reject the Department of Justice's decision to terminate over 300 ongoing hate crime grants and proposed elimination of the Community Relations Service. There’s only one takeaway from this action by DOJ, especially given the alarming rise in reported hate crimes across the country in recent years: That they wish to undermine and slant justice away from communities that are often targeted by hate crimes, and discriminated against as we have seen already during this Administration. That is not equal justice under the law. The DOJ action demand a hearing and explanation. Attorney General Bondi’s actions undermine critical programs aimed at preventing and responding to hate-motivated violence, leaving communities and victims without vital support during times of crisis. These actions show a disregard for standards of justice at the Federal level and will undermine state efforts. The grants authorized under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act provide essential funding for initiatives such as improving law enforcement's capacity to investigate hate crimes, establishing state hate crime reporting hotlines, and implementing programs that prevent and respond to these heinous acts. Terminating these grants directly contradicts the DOJ's stated priorities of combating violent crime, protecting children, supporting victims, and coordinating law enforcement efforts. Furthermore, the proposed elimination of the Community Relations Service (CRS) would unlawfully dismantle a congressionally mandated program that has played a crucial role in mediating conflicts and reducing the potential for violence since its establishment under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As you know, the CRS works closely with local law enforcement, civil rights organizations, and religious leaders to maintain peace and engage communities targeted by hate crimes, providing invaluable support during times of heightened tension. These changes not only disregard congressional intent and appropriations but also endanger public safety and undermine efforts to address the rising tide of hate crimes plaguing our nation. I urge immediate action to be taken to reinstate the improperly terminated grants and preserve the vital work of the Community Relations Service. Immediate oversight hearings must be conducted to thoroughly investigate these concerning actions by Attorney General Bondi and her associates and ensure the DOJ upholds its commitment to protecting all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or background. Thank you for your attention to this core principle of our justice system.
