I strongly oppose provisions in H.R.1 that would undermine vital social safety net programs millions of Americans depend on for their health and well-being. Measures like imposing harsh work requirements for Medicaid eligibility, restricting state tax authority, and making changes to state-directed payment policies are projected to strip over 10 million people of their Medicaid coverage. This risks depriving vulnerable communities of essential care and threatens their health and stability. Furthermore, failure to extend the Affordable Care Act's enhanced premium tax credits could leave 5 million Americans uninsured, including nearly 2 million with chronic conditions. Millions more would face unaffordable premiums and lack access to care. Proposed cuts to nutritional assistance would only compound economic burdens for struggling families. Rather than creating barriers and withholding support from those most in need, we should be strengthening programs that uphold the dignity of all people and provide a pathway to flourishing. I urge you to protect Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, SNAP and other vital safety nets that reflect our nation's commitment to the common good. Budgetary decisions must prioritize the human and moral costs, not just economic impacts benefiting a privileged few. Policies should empower human dignity and well-being over corporate profits.
