I am writing to you today as a deeply concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to the administration’s aggressive expansion of offshore oil and gas leasing in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the decision by the Endangered Species Committee to exempt these drilling activities from the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The proposal to open up vast new tracts of federal waters, including previously protected areas in the eastern Gulf near Florida, puts our coastal economies, marine ecosystems, and long-term security at catastrophic risk. Ramping up deepwater drilling is projected to drastically increase the frequency of oil spills, vessel strikes, and disruptive seismic testing. This pushes critically endangered wildlife, such as the Rice’s whale, sea turtles, and the Gulf sturgeon, directly toward extinction. We must remember that human beings do not live in an isolated bubble. Earth’s ecosystems are intricate, interdependent webs. What we do to the smallest or most vulnerable marine organisms ultimately vibrates up the food chain to affect us. When a key species is depleted or eliminated, it triggers a devastating trophic cascade. The collapse of apex predators or foundational species disrupts entire marine populations, degrading the health of the oceans that regulate our climate, produce the oxygen we breathe, and sustain global food supplies. The loss of biodiversity is not merely a tragedy for nature; it is a direct threat to human survival. The natural world provides invaluable ecological services, from storm mitigation and coastal protection to carbon sequestration and economic stability through tourism and fisheries, that no amount of industrial engineering can replace. The administration’s utilization of a loophole to bypass the ESA is a dangerous and short-sighted precedent. True national security is impossible to achieve without ecological security. Exploiting finite fossil fuels at the expense of our planet's biological lifeline will not protect our future; it will actively destabilize it. I strongly urge you to use your legislative authority to oppose this reckless expansion, demand oversight into the recent ESA exemptions, and champion policies that invest in a clean, resilient energy transition. Our survival depends entirely on the health of the interconnected systems around us. Thank you for your time, leadership, and serious consideration of this urgent matter. I look forward to hearing about the actions you intend to take to protect the Gulf of Mexico and our shared future.
