Exempt federal firefighters from hiring freeze for wildfire preparedness

To: Rep. Lieu, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

The federal government's hiring freeze poses a grave risk to public safety and wildland fire management capabilities for the upcoming fire season. Thousands of seasonal federal firefighters who perform critical roles in fuel reduction, wildfire response, and emergency assistance are unable to be hired due to this blanket policy. Even though the executive order exempted public safety positions, federal firefighters have inexplicably been caught in the crosshairs of this directive. This jeopardizes adequate staffing levels when wildfire activity inevitably increases in the coming months. Federal crews were indispensable assets during the catastrophic Los Angeles County fires, saving neighborhoods and supporting strained local resources. Lacking these vital personnel raises concerns over having sufficient firefighting resources deployed across vulnerable regions. The extensive training, vetting, and onboarding processes for federal firefighters mean any delays now directly impact response readiness. Ensuring robust wildfire preparedness should be an utmost priority, as the devastating impacts of fires jeopardize lives, property, and communities. Wildfires recognize no jurisdictional boundaries, necessitating a fully staffed joint federal-state-local firefighting force. Expedited hiring exemptions must be granted for federal firefighters to mitigate this unacceptable risk that the administration's policy has triggered. Protecting public safety from wildfire threats should supersede any rationale for impeding the hiring of these essential emergency responders.
