I am writing as a constituent to express deep concern about the growing perception that the Department of Justice is being used as a political instrument, particularly with respect to investigations and prosecutions involving journalists and individuals perceived as political enemies of President Trump. An independent Department of Justice is foundational to our constitutional system. When prosecutorial power appears to be wielded selectively or politically, public trust in the rule of law erodes rapidly. Regardless of party or administration, the DOJ must not be used to intimidate the press, punish dissent, or advance the political interests of the executive branch. Journalism, especially investigative reporting that scrutinizes those in power, is not a threat to democracy. It is a safeguard of it. Any effort to criminalize or chill lawful journalistic activity should alarm every member of Congress who has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution. Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to act as a check on executive overreach. I urge you to support robust, public oversight of the Department of Justice through the appropriate congressional committees, including hearings, document requests, and clear guardrails that reaffirm DOJ’s independence from political influence. Oversight is not obstruction, it is a core constitutional duty. This issue transcends partisan politics. Today’s precedent will shape the power available to future administrations of any party. I ask you to stand firmly for the principle that justice in the United States must be impartial, transparent, and free from political retaliation. I appreciate your attention to this matter and expect Congress to act decisively to protect the integrity of our justice system.
