Donald Trump is floating “Trump Ocean” as a new name for the Atlantic or Pacific. At a Tennessee rally, he also suggested “Ocean of the Americas” and said he wanted an ocean renamed before leaving office.
Trump has already directed federal name changes for the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. Current law allows for him to change the terminology used by U.S. agencies, even though other countries have no obligation to follow along -- and neither do corporations like Google or Apple. But when Trump’s madness is backed up by concessions from corporate mapmakers it encourages him to go further.
The consequences of these stunts extend beyond a map. Trump’s fight with the Associated Press over “Gulf of Mexico” led to restrictions on the outlet’s access. His demand for personal loyalty reaches into the language journalists use, the information the public receives, and even what children are taught in schools.
Congress can put an end to this. You can introduce legislation that protects national parks, mountains, property, lakes, and even oceans from Trump’s ego and self-aggrandizement. You don’t even have to make the block permanent. Congress could literally just block THIS president from renaming things if you want.
Enough is enough. Congress must take away a president's ability to rename any land, water, or building without congressional approval now.
