Oppose Any Policy That Forces Outing of Trans Students

To: Rep. Fong, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Ridgecrest, CA

April 29

I need you to oppose any policy that would require schools to out transgender students to their parents without the student's consent. This isn't about parental rights. It's about keeping kids alive. Forced outing policies put vulnerable students in direct danger. Not every home is safe for LGBTQ+ youth. When schools become extensions of surveillance rather than sanctuaries, trans students face increased risks of family rejection, homelessness, and suicide. The Trevor Project found that LGBTQ+ youth who reported having at least one accepting adult were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt. Sometimes that one adult is a teacher or counselor, not a parent. Schools should be places where students can explore their identity safely. Mandatory outing policies will push trans students back into the closet, denying them access to supportive adults and mental health resources when they need them most. Students will stop seeking help entirely if they know disclosure means forced outing. Vote against any measure that prioritizes ideology over student safety. Trust students and educators to navigate these conversations when the time is right for each family.
