The President’s insider trading

To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Van Duyne, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

April 12

It is deeply concerning President Trump appeared to leverage his position to manipulate markets for personal gain mere hours before unilaterally announcing a major policy shift away from tariffs. This raises serious ethical and legal questions regarding insider trading and market manipulation that warrant thorough investigation, as it severely undermines market investors’ confidence. The American people who lost retirement savings in last week’s tariff debacle—my wife and I included—deserve full transparency and accountability to ensure no laws were broken and that insiders did not improperly enrich themselves or tip off others at taxpayers’ expense. No one person should have the power to declare or cancel tariffs. That is the role of Congress, granted to them in the Constitution’s Article One. You, as a member of Congress, have the ability to ensure fair markets are free from manipulation and abuse of power. You, as a member of Congress, have the ability to safeguard your constituents’ financial investments. My wife and I implore you to reclaim your tariff authority and take appropriate action to safeguard public trust. We also urge you to uphold the integrity of our financial markets by pursuing an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the timing of the President's social media posts and tariff pause announcements.
