Reinstate Funding for Meals on Wheels in San Antonio
To: Gov. Abbott
From: A constituent in Universal City, TX
October 17, 2025
I am writing to urge you to reinstate funding for Meals on Wheels in San Antonio. This vital program serves our most vulnerable residents, including elderly and disabled individuals who rely on this service for their daily nutritional needs.
Meals on Wheels is more than just a food delivery service. It provides a lifeline for those who might otherwise be isolated and unable to access proper nutrition. For many recipients, the volunteer who delivers their meal may be the only person they see that day, offering not just sustenance but also a critical wellness check and social interaction.
The impact of defunding this program would be severe. Without Meals on Wheels, many of our elderly and disabled neighbors could face malnutrition, increased hospitalizations, and a higher risk of needing to move into assisted living facilities prematurely. This not only affects their quality of life but also places a greater burden on our healthcare system and social services.
Economically, investing in Meals on Wheels makes sense. It's far more cost-effective to support people in their homes than to pay for institutional care. By helping seniors and people with disabilities maintain their independence, we reduce healthcare costs and alleviate pressure on nursing homes and hospitals.
I ask that you take immediate action to restore funding for Meals on Wheels in San Antonio. Our community's strength is measured by how we care for our most vulnerable members. By supporting this program, we affirm our commitment to the well-being of all San Antonio residents, regardless of age or ability.
Please prioritize this issue in your upcoming budget discussions and work with your colleagues to ensure that Meals on Wheels receives the funding it needs to continue its essential work in our community. The health and dignity of our elderly and disabled neighbors depend on your swift action.
