I am writing to express my concern about the recent nationwide immigration enforcement operations by ICE, during which 165 non-criminal undocumented individuals were detained. While ensuring the safety of our state is paramount, these actions raise important questions about resource allocation, public trust, and the impact on Louisiana’s economy and communities. As a strong proponent of law and order, you understand that government resources should be used efficiently and effectively. Targeting individuals who have committed no crimes, beyond their immigration status, diverts resources away from addressing serious criminal activity. Louisiana faces challenges that demand immediate attention, from crime in our cities to natural disaster preparedness. Ensuring that state resources are focused on these priorities—not assisting federal overreach—is both fiscally responsible and in the best interest of our state. Additionally, Louisiana’s economy relies on the contributions of immigrant communities, many of whom work in industries vital to our state, such as agriculture, construction, and hospitality. Creating an atmosphere of fear risks destabilizing these industries and hurting small businesses, many of which depend on these workers to thrive. I urge you to take the following steps to ensure that Louisiana balances law enforcement with the preservation of public trust and economic stability: 1. Focus on Criminal Activity: Make it clear that Louisiana will prioritize resources to address real threats to public safety, not federal immigration actions targeting non-criminal individuals. 2. Support Local Businesses: Engage with Louisiana’s business community to understand how these enforcement actions impact key industries and consider policies that protect our workforce. 3. Ensure Transparency: Advocate for clear communication between state and federal agencies to prevent unnecessary disruptions and foster trust within our communities. As a leader who has championed both economic growth and public safety, I trust you will recognize the importance of balancing enforcement with practicality and compassion. Standing up for Louisiana’s priorities is not just a political decision—it’s common sense. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I look forward to hearing how your administration plans to address these concerns.
