Due process a Constitutional right

To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Van Duyne, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

April 15

This Republican administration ignored the due process of law guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution by sending Kilmar Abrego Garcia to an El Salvador prison without a hearing in front of an impartial tribunal. This administration then ignored a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling requiring it to return Mr. Abrego Garcia to the United Sates. Now, in a meeting with El Salvador’s dictator, Nayib Bukele, President Trump casually mentioned he wants to send US citizens to El Salvadoran prisons and told Bukele to build five more torture camps to house them. In less than a week, this Republican administration has violated a US legal resident’s rights, violated the Constitution, and ignored a unanimous Supreme Court ruling. And has faced no negative consequences of doing so. If Supreme Court decisions don’t matter, we are not a functioning democracy. If we cozy up to an El Salvadoran thug, what are we? Do you, as a Republican, support these actions by this administration? If so, our country is in a true Constitutional crisis, where the checks and balances set forth by our nation’s founders have been utterly dismantled. If, however, you do not support these actions, what measures will you take to uphold your oath to the Constitution, restore those checks and balances, and rein in this administration? My wife and I ask you to state, plainly and publicly, that you oppose this administration’s illegal, unconstitutional actions, and demand the administration expedite Mr. Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States and his family.
