Do not eliminate Social Security phone service!

To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Van Duyne, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Bedford, TX

March 12

The Social Security Administration (SSA) plays a crucial role in providing access to benefits for millions of elderly and disabled Americans. Reports indicate the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is pressuring the SSA to eliminate telephone support for claims processing and direct-deposit account transactions. This could severely hamper public access for those who rely on phone services due to lack of internet access or difficulty navigating online systems. While measures against fraud are important, cutting off this vital communication channel would disproportionately impact vulnerable populations. A more balanced approach should be taken that maintains telephone access while strengthening authentication processes as needed. Completely eliminating phone services seems an overreach that could leave many struggling to access their earned benefits. The SSA's toll-free number is a lifeline for countless retirees and those with disabilities. Preserving this resource should be a priority when pursuing efforts to streamline operations and reduce waste. I urge you to closely examine the potential consequences of discontinuing telephone support and consider alternative solutions that don't restrict access for those most in need of SSA's services.
