Urgent: End Federal Control of D.C. Police & Remove Military

To: Sen. McConnell, Rep. Barr, Sen. Paul

From: A constituent in Lexington, KY

August 11

I urge you to demand the removal of the military from D.C. and restore full local authority over the Metropolitan Police Department. On Aug. 11, 2025, the President ordered 800 National Guard troops into D.C. and took federal control of its police under Section 740 of the Home Rule Act (The Guardian). This was done despite major crime drops: • Violent crime is down 26% in 2025, after a 35% drop in 2024 (Fox 5 DC). • 99 homicides this year vs. 112 in 2024; assaults and sex-abuse cases also sharply declined. D.C. already has six military installations, making this show of force unnecessary and undemocratic. The move undermines home rule, sets a dangerous precedent, and erodes trust in civilian governance. Please oppose this overreach, back full civilian control of D.C. police, and demand troop withdrawal.
