Resist rising fascism, defend democracy resolutely in Iowa.

April 4

As fellow Iowans, we must confront the stark reality that fascism is manifesting in our nation. Its insidious influence has taken root through the normalization of cruelty, the redefinition of truth, and the selective application of the rule of law. We cannot afford to euphemize or downplay this grave threat to our democracy. The systematic efforts to whitewash history, ban books, demonize marginalized communities, and strip away constitutional rights from peaceful protesters are unmistakable signs that fascist ideologies are gaining traction. We must resist the temptation to view these as isolated incidents or mere "dysfunctions" – they are calculated steps towards authoritarian control and the erasure of our democratic values. Naming this danger for what it is – fascism – is not an act of alarmism but a moral imperative. By using clear, precise language, we can shape thought and galvanize action against this pernicious force. Normalization begins when we remain silent or resort to euphemisms that obscure the urgency of our circumstances. We call upon you, as our elected representative, to boldly confront this crisis with honesty and courage. Speak the truth, challenge historical revisionism, and defend the rights of all citizens without faltering. The survival of our democracy hinges on our collective willingness to name fascism, understand its patterns, and mount an unwavering resistance against its authoritarian overtures. The stakes could not be higher, and our vigilance must be resolute.
