The Trump administration’s obsession with criminalizing immigrants is making America less safe, not more secure. Since January, more than 1,300 federal agents from the FBI, DEA, and ATF have been pulled from drug, terrorism, and cybercrime cases to focus on immigration raids and border crackdowns. Meanwhile, Trump’s budget is funneling over $150 billion into ICE and border walls while leaving real threats unchecked. Experts warn this shift has left cartels, hackers, and traffickers free to operate with fewer obstacles.
Just last month, the Colombian navy intercepted a Starlink-powered drug submarine carrying over 1.5 tons of cocaine, showing how cartels are advancing their smuggling technology while U.S. resources are stuck chasing asylum seekers. Other serious threats are being ignored. Fentanyl shipments continue to pour in through legal ports of entry and cargo shipments, not through migrants crossing deserts. Cyberattacks targeting hospitals and water systems have increased this year, with some traced back to overseas ransomware groups while federal cyber units face hiring freezes. Human trafficking networks remain under-investigated as more Homeland Security staff are reassigned to immigration sweeps instead of protecting children and trafficking victims.
Americans also face higher risks from domestic violent extremism, which the FBI has warned is the top terror threat inside the United States. Yet funding and personnel for domestic terrorism investigations have been slashed in favor of immigration raids. Public health is also at risk. Dangerous synthetic drugs like nitazenes are entering the country largely undetected as focus shifts away from inspecting international shipping channels.
Congress must take action now. Stop the political theater and restore funding and staff to fight real national security threats. Prioritize counterterrorism, cyber defense, drug interdiction, and human trafficking prevention over fear-based immigration crackdowns. The evidence is clear. America’s security and human lives are being compromised by this misguided agenda. We demand immediate action to refocus federal efforts on true threats, not political stunts.
