Safeguard democracy, protect human rights before January 20th transfer

November 22

There is no doubt that the re-election of Donald Trump poses grave threats to our democratic norms and institutions. His administration's outlined proposals from The Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 are deeply concerning, threatening mass deportations of immigrant families, denial of medical care for trans individuals, stripping away abortion rights, punishing political dissent, and more. Given the immense stakes for vulnerable communities, it is imperative that decisive action is taken to safeguard our democracy before the next administration takes over. Additionally, a moratorium on warrantless government purchases of Americans' personal data would help protect privacy rights. Finally, halting the expansion of abusive immigration detention facilities and closing those notorious for human rights violations is critical to upholding the legal and moral obligations we have toward migrants and asylum seekers. These proposed executive actions could help mitigate some of the most severe threats to civil liberties that the incoming administration seems poised to unleash. Protecting democracy requires using all available powers before the transfer to the new presidency on January 20th. Resolute leadership is needed now more than ever to preserve human rights, civil liberties, and the foundations of our democratic system itself.
