I am deeply concerned by the proposal for El Salvador to house violent criminals, deportees of any nationality, and potentially even US citizens in their prisons. This unprecedented agreement raises serious legal and humanitarian issues that must be addressed. Deporting incarcerated US nationals to another country would face significant legal challenges as it is prohibited to deport US citizens, regardless of their criminal status. Additionally, sending asylum seekers and migrants to a third country they have no ties to violates principles of refugee protection and human rights norms. The conditions in El Salvador's prisons are alarmingly harsh, with widespread overcrowding, lack of due process, and inadequate access to basic necessities like sanitation and healthcare. Subjecting any individual, let alone US citizens, to such inhumane conditions is unacceptable and a violation of their fundamental rights. I urge you to reconsider this agreement and uphold the United States' commitment to human rights, due process, and the humane treatment of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status or nationality. There must be alternative solutions that respect international laws and human dignity.
