Congressional Democrats must contend with mounting public concerns over President Biden's age and cognitive abilities. The President's recent television interview with George Stephanopoulos raised more questions than it answered about his capacity to wage an effective campaign against Donald Trump. While Biden has accomplished much as President, his struggles to clearly articulate his vision for another term were worrying to many. Protecting our democracy from the existential threat of a second Trump presidency is paramount. An open and honest assessment of Biden's viability as a candidate is crucial. Continuing to avoid this difficult conversation could jeopardize Democratic chances in 2024 and the future of our democratic norms and institutions. A proactive approach grounded in reality, no matter how challenging, is needed now to strengthen the party's prospects.
