Vote no on any budget reconciliation bill that increases funding for ICE and CBP without meaningful reforms or accountability measures. These agencies have documented records of human rights abuses, and funneling more money to them through a partisan process that bypasses normal debate is unacceptable.
Budget reconciliation requires offsetting new spending with cuts elsewhere. That means funding ICE and military operations in Iran will come at the expense of programs Americans actually need, like Affordable Care Act financial assistance. Right now, people in my community are struggling with rising healthcare, food, and fuel costs. They need relief, not cuts to the safety net so Congress can write blank checks to agencies that operate without oversight.
Congress should be focused on reining in ICE and CBP, not enabling them. If Republicans want to increase funding for immigration enforcement, they should go through the regular legislative process where these proposals can receive proper scrutiny and debate. Using reconciliation to ram through funding for agencies with such troubling track records is a betrayal of congressional responsibility.
