Why Did Iowa’s Top Election Official Take Money a Complaint Says the Law Forbids? I am asking you to press for a prompt, independent review of Secretary of State Paul Pate’s acceptance of a campaign contribution that an ethics complaint says Iowa law prohibits, and to stand up for fair dealing and transparency in government, beginning with the official who runs our elections. On Oct. 20, Lara Plecas of Des Moines filed a complaint accusing Pate of violating an Iowa law that bars candidates from accepting money from any other candidate’s committee, including committees from other states. It concerns a $5,000 contribution from the campaign committee of Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales. On Oct. 22, Pate said the money had been returned and his campaign was amending its financial report. The Des Moines Register reports he raised roughly $48,000 in his latest period, so this one contribution was about a tenth of it. The complainant has voiced support for Pate’s opponent, Ryan Peterman, but the statute and the finance record are public. I have found no ruling from the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, so this remains an allegation. Returning the money after a complaint does not explain how it was accepted, who reviewed it, or whether the law was broken first. In October 2024, almost two weeks before Election Day, Pate told county auditors to challenge the ballots of more than 2,000 registered voters he alleged might not be citizens, according to Axios. His own campaign deserves the same scrutiny. When I cast my ballot, I am trusting that the person overseeing the system that counts it follows the same rules he enforces on everyone else. I expect the state’s chief election official to catch a problem like this himself, not learn of it after a stranger files a complaint. I am asking you to: 1. Urge the Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board to review the complaint promptly and publish its findings. 2. Request that Pate explain publicly, in writing or at an oversight hearing, how the contribution was accepted and who reviewed it. 3. Support legislation requiring statewide campaigns to certify that contributions are screened against the ban on other candidates’ committees. Why did Iowa’s top election official take money a complaint says the law forbids? I do not know, and I should not have to guess. The answer should come from an independent review, not from the person who benefited. The money went back only after a complaint, and Iowans should not need one to get an honest explanation. Thank you for standing up for transparency in our government.
