Vote No on the Predatory Budget Reconciliation Bill
To: Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray, Rep. Newhouse
From: A constituent in Rock Island, WA
May 15
As you consider the upcoming budget reconciliation bill, I urge you to oppose this deeply harmful and partisan legislation. While it is being advanced under the guise of fiscal responsibility and tax reform, the bill is little more than a vehicle for massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations—paid for by devastating cuts to critical public programs and long-standing protections for working people. This bill includes: • $351 billion in cuts to student aid, including caps on Pell Grant eligibility, limits on student borrowing, repeals of borrower protections, and the elimination of President Biden’s student debt forgiveness initiative. • $50 billion in cuts to the Federal Employee Retirement System, gutting retirement benefits, reducing take-home pay, and weakening workplace protections for public servants. • A 70% reduction in funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the complete dismantling of the Public Accounting Oversight Board, undermining oversight of public companies and consumer financial protections. • A new tax on electric and hybrid vehicles, and the elimination of funding for green energy initiatives authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act—including clean tech, low-carbon materials, and sustainable transportation. • REINS Act provisions that give Congress sweeping authority to block or repeal federal regulations, even after implementation—jeopardizing essential health, safety, labor, and environmental rules. • $25 billion for a “Golden Dome” space-based missile defense system, widely seen as a corporate giveaway to contractors like Elon Musk’s SpaceX. • New restrictions on federal judges’ power to hold officials in contempt, an alarming step that appears designed to shield former Trump administration officials from accountability. This legislation does not reflect the needs or values of the American people. It prioritizes tax breaks for the powerful at the expense of students, workers, consumers, and the environment. I demand that you to stand up for your constituents and reject this bill. Your vote will signal whether you stand with everyday Americans or with powerful special interests and partisan agendas. Vote NO on the reconciliation bill.
