Protect student loan access for doctors and lawyers

To: Rep. Carter, Sen. Kennedy, Sen. Cassidy

From: A verified voter in New Orleans, LA

May 24

This proposed tax legislation unfairly targets medical students and law students by imposing limits on student loan deductions, exacerbating the financial burden they already shoulder. Access to quality healthcare and legal representation depends on a robust pipeline of new doctors and lawyers entering the workforce. However, these measures will dissuade aspiring physicians and attorneys from pursuing their calling due to the immense debt they would accrue. In addition this bill would also create a shortage of lawyers when we have a serious crisis when it comes to access to justice in rural places. Limiting loans for lawyers at excellent schools like Tulane and LSU is a nonstarter and will hurt Louisiana. As representatives, you have a duty to safeguard the interests of your constituents, including ensuring accessible medical care and legal services. Obstructing the pathway to becoming a doctor or lawyer contradicts this obligation and jeopardizes public health and equal protection under the law. I urge you to reconsider this misguided policy that stifles opportunity and compromises our medical and legal infrastructure.
