Condemn Extremist Groups Before the Midterms — A Constituent Letter I am writing as your constituent because time is short and the threat is not slowing down. With the midterm elections approaching, extremist groups — neo-Nazi organizations, white supremacist and white nationalist networks, the Ku Klux Klan and other racist hate groups, Christian nationalist groups, and armed anti-government militias — are becoming more visible and more emboldened. Election workers and voters are already facing intimidation. This cannot wait until after ballots are cast. I am asking you to sponsor or co-sponsor a resolution condemning these groups by name, and to make your own public condemnation before early voting begins. Both should happen now, not after an incident forces the issue. This has been done before, and it did not require full partisan agreement. In September 2017, after the deadly white-supremacist violence in Charlottesville, both chambers of Congress passed S.J.Res. 49 unanimously. It condemned white nationalists, white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, and neo-Nazis by name, and it directed federal law enforcement to treat the rise of hate groups as a serious threat. Similar resolutions introduced in 2019 and 2021 stalled — but the ones that passed shared a simple trait: they named the groups plainly and moved fast. That is what this moment requires. Specifically, I am asking you to, within the next 30 days: 1 Sponsor or co-sponsor a resolution condemning, by name, neo-Nazi groups, white supremacist and white nationalist organizations, the Ku Klux Klan and other racist hate groups, Christian nationalist groups, armed anti-government militias, and other authoritarian extremist movements — and rejecting political violence and anti-democracy organizing of any kind. 2 Call for improved federal tracking of hate crimes and domestic extremist violence, consistent with the 2017 resolution’s approach. 3 Publicly and unambiguously condemn these groups in your own voice — in a statement, on the record — before early voting begins. Silence has a cost. When elected officials stay quiet, extremist groups read it as permission. Voters are watching who speaks up before the election, not just after something goes wrong. I am asking for a direct response: will you commit to co-sponsoring this resolution and issuing a public statement in the next 30 days?
