Urgent: Addressing the ADHD Medication Shortage Crisis—Lives Are at Risk

To: Sen. Grassley, Rep. Feenstra, Sen. Ernst

From: A verified voter in Slater, IA

August 27

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing shortages of ADHD medication and the significant barriers this has created for individuals like myself who rely on these medications to manage their condition. As someone personally affected by this shortage, I urge you to take immediate action to address the policies contributing to this crisis. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions of Americans, with diagnoses steadily rising as awareness and understanding of the condition improve. However, the recent restrictions imposed by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which limit the production of amphetamines, have led to severe shortages of ADHD medications. These restrictions were enacted based on concerns about potential stimulant abuse during the pandemic, but they have had unintended and devastating consequences for those of us who depend on these medications for our daily functioning. The shortage has driven the cost of brand-name ADHD medications to exorbitant levels, with some estimates showing that the price has increased by over 300% in recent years. This has forced many individuals to turn to the black market or go without necessary treatment altogether. The repercussions of untreated ADHD are profound and far-reaching. Studies show that untreated ADHD increases the risk of death by 25%, as well as significantly raising the likelihood of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and poor life outcomes. Given these alarming statistics, it is clear that the current policies need urgent re-evaluation. I respectfully request that you advocate for the following actions: Urge the DEA to Re-evaluate Production Caps: The DEA should reconsider the production limits on amphetamines, ensuring that they are based on current and accurate data reflecting the medical needs of those diagnosed with ADHD. Increase Access to Affordable Medication: Work with pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers to ensure that ADHD medications are affordable and accessible to all who need them, without forcing patients into financial hardship or unsafe alternatives. Address the Stigma Around ADHD: Support public awareness campaigns to reduce the stigma associated with ADHD and its treatment, encouraging more individuals to seek the care they need without fear of judgment or discrimination. As a constituent, I believe it is critical that our elected officials take these issues seriously and act to protect the health and well-being of those living with ADHD. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response and hope to see meaningful changes implemented in the near future.
