Congress Must Stop Russell Vought’s Assault on Federal Workers & Social Security

To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

July 19

I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over the continued attacks on federal employees, Social Security, and the basic institutions Americans depend upon under this administration and the influence of Russell Vought. A recent Government Executive article highlights the growing uncertainty surrounding Social Security and the serious consequences that uncertainty has for federal employees. Workers covered under FERS have spent their entire careers planning for retirement based on a system built around three pillars: their FERS pension, the Thrift Savings Plan, and Social Security. Yet millions of workers and retirees are now being forced to wonder whether the promises they spent decades working and paying for will still be there when they need them. This uncertainty is made even more disturbing by an administration that has spent its time attacking the federal workforce, weakening agencies, eliminating experienced public servants, undermining collective bargaining rights, and treating career civil servants as political enemies rather than Americans who have dedicated their careers to serving the public. Russell Vought has been one of the central architects of this agenda. His hostility toward the federal workforce and his efforts to dramatically reshape the federal government should concern every American, regardless of political party. These are not abstract policy experiments. The decisions being made in Washington affect the retirement security, livelihoods, and futures of millions of workers and their families, while also threatening the ability of agencies like the Social Security Administration to serve the public. It is particularly unacceptable to create instability around Social Security while simultaneously weakening the federal workforce responsible for administering essential government programs. Americans have paid into Social Security throughout their working lives. Federal employees have also structured their retirement plans around promises made to them by their government. They deserve stability, transparency, and responsible leadership, not manufactured chaos and constant threats to their financial security. Congress cannot continue to stand by while Russell Vought and this administration dismantle institutions, undermine public servants, and create uncertainty for working Americans and retirees. Congress is a separate and coequal branch of government, and its members have a responsibility to use their authority to provide meaningful oversight and protect the public from reckless executive overreach. I urge you to oppose Russell Vought’s destructive agenda, defend the federal workforce, protect Social Security and the retirement security of federal employees, and demand accountability from this administration. Federal employees and the American public should not be forced to live with constant uncertainty because of an ideological campaign to dismantle the government institutions they rely upon. Please stand up for the people you represent and use every tool available to Congress to protect Social Security, federal employees, retirees, and the integrity of our public institutions.
