Support H.R. 6731 — Comprehensive Ethics Reform Must Apply to All Branches

Dear Member of Congress,
I am writing as a constituent to express strong support for H.R. 6731, the Restore Trust in Government Act, and to urge your public support for comprehensive ethics reform that applies consistently across the federal government.
H.R. 6731 would prohibit Members of Congress, the President, the Vice President, and their immediate families from owning or trading individual stocks and other covered investments while serving in office. This broad and even-handed approach directly addresses the structural conflicts of interest that have steadily eroded public confidence in federal decision-making. Ethics rules that apply across branches reinforce the principle that public office is a public trust — not an opportunity for private financial advantage.
I am aware of the alternative proposal, H.R. 5106, which limits its scope to Members of Congress and their families. While that bill acknowledges a real problem, its narrow focus leaves a significant gap. Executive branch officials wield immense influence over regulation, enforcement, procurement, and national economic policy. Excluding them from meaningful financial restrictions undermines the stated goal of restoring trust and creates an uneven standard that the public easily recognizes as incomplete.
Partial reform is not the same as effective reform. When ethics legislation carves out exceptions for entire branches of government, it signals that political convenience is being prioritized over accountability. H.R. 6731 avoids that mistake by applying a single, clear standard to all covered officials, regardless of branch or party.
I urge you to publicly support H.R. 6731 and to encourage congressional leadership to advance comprehensive ethics reform that fully addresses conflicts of interest across the federal government. Restoring public trust requires reforms that are principled, consistent, and applied without carve-outs.
Thank you for your time and for your service to the public.
