Regulate AI to Protect People, Not Just Profits

To: Sen. Blunt Rochester, Sen. Coons, Rep. McBride

From: A verified voter in Millsboro, DE

July 15

Pass strong federal AI legislation that puts public safety first. The technology is advancing faster than any guardrails we have, and the window to act responsibly is closing. I want you on the right side of this. The risks are not hypothetical. The IEA projects AI will generate 180 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2025 alone. Estimates suggest up to 47% of US jobs face high displacement risk. Deepfakes and algorithmic bias are already causing real harm to real people. Meanwhile, a handful of Big Tech corporations — Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft — are consolidating control over this technology with minimal accountability. The EU AI Act is in force. The Council of Europe has a binding international treaty. The US is falling behind on governance while leading on deployment. Support legislation that mandates transparency, restricts lethal autonomous weapons, protects workers from unchecked displacement, and holds corporations — not individuals — responsible for harm. The technology can do extraordinary good. That only happens if we build the right rules now.
