No Political Branding on Our Money: Oppose H.R. 1790 & Presidential Signature

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Beatty

From: A verified voter in Columbus, OH

March 27

I am writing to express my profound opposition to the Department of the Treasury’s recent announcement regarding the inclusion of a sitting president's signature on U.S. banknotes. Furthermore, I wish to register my absolute rejection of current legislative proposals—such as the "Golden Age Act"—aimed at placing the President’s portrait on our paper currency. The United States is a Republic, not a monarchy. For over 160 years, our currency has featured the signatures of the Treasurer and the Secretary of the Treasury as symbols of institutional stability. Replacing the Treasurer’s signature with that of a sitting president is an appalling departure from this democratic standard. It transforms our national legal tender into a tool for personal vanity and political branding. Even more concerning are the efforts to place the President’s likeness on the $100 bill or other denominations. Since the Act of April 7, 1866, federal law has strictly prohibited the portraits of living persons from appearing on U.S. currency. This law exists specifically to prevent the "cult of personality" dynamics associated with authoritarian regimes. Any attempt to override this statute for the sake of a vanity project is a slap in the face to American tradition and a flagrant waste of taxpayer resources. I urge you to take the following actions: 1. Oppose the Golden Age Act and any other legislation seeking to place a sitting president’s image on legal tender. 2. Introduce or support funding restrictions that would prevent the Treasury from using federal funds to print currency bearing a presidential signature. 3. Protect the historical integrity of our currency from being used as a campaign medium. Our money should reflect the enduring strength of our institutions, not the ego of the individual currently in office. I look forward to hearing how you plan to defend these American standards.
