$4.3 Billion in Dark Money Says Citizens United Is Only Working For the Rich

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Beatty

From: A verified voter in Columbus, OH

October 8

I am writing as your constituent to demand that you co-sponsor and fight for passage of the Democracy for All Amendment (H.J.Res. 121 / S.J.Res. 43) to overturn the disastrous consequences of Citizens United v. FEC and Buckley v. Valeo. Our constitutional system was founded on popular sovereignty: government of, by, and for the people. Fifteen years ago, five unelected justices decided that corporations are people and money is speech, and handed the government to whoever can write the biggest check. Since then, over $4.3 billion in dark money alone has poured into our elections from donors voters will never be allowed to know. That is not democracy. That is an auction, and most Americans can't afford a seat. The consequences are not abstract, and they are not accidental: - Stripping State Sovereignty: Citizens United invalidated campaign finance protections passed by democratically elected state legislatures across the country, overriding the will of voters who tried to protect their own elections from outside corporate money. - Drowning Out the Average Citizen: When billionaires and corporations can spend without limit, your vote doesn't disappear — it just stops mattering. Tax carve-outs, regulatory loopholes, and legislative priorities get written for whoever paid for the privilege, not for the people who have to live with the results. - Even the Public Doesn't Buy It: 72% of U.S. adults, including 71% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, say there should be limits on campaign spending, according to Pew Research. This isn't a fringe position. The only people defending this system are the ones profiting from it. The Democracy for All Amendment is the fix: 1. Restore Article I Authority: Affirms that Congress and the states have the explicit authority to regulate and set reasonable limits on the raising and spending of money to influence elections. 2. Distinguish People from Artificial Entities: Clarifies that the constitutional rights of living human beings are not the same as those of artificial corporate entities, allowing lawmakers to regulate or prohibit corporate and union expenditures. 3. Protect Press Freedom: Explicitly preserves First Amendment protections for a free press while eliminating the unchecked power of commercial front groups posing as speech. I don't expect every member of this Congress to vote yes. I do expect every member to go on the record, by name, in public, about whether they think billionaires and corporations should outvote their own constituents. If you vote no, say so, and explain to the people who elected you why you think their voice should count less than a donor's checkbook. Co-sponsor H.J.Res. 121 / S.J.Res. 43. Put voters ahead of megadonors, or tell us to our faces why you won't.
