Check ICE power, Save The Brave 16
To: Rep. Menefee
From: A constituent in Houston, TX
August 22
I am writing to ask you to halt the deportations of The Brave 16. The Brave 16 include youth asylum seekers from Eritrea and Ethiopia who have been detained for nearly two years. Despite having strong asylum cases and being found credible their cases have been denied. So, for nearly two years they have been under ICE custody until their cases can be appealed/reopened. They are given dirty water to drink, (clean bottled water costs more than their daily taxes wages). Food is meager, and some are in need of hospitalization. Intimidation tactics are frequently used. Previously ICE deportations could be halted through legal filings until an official decision had been made. Now, changes in immigration laws have given ICE more leeway. In Texas, ICE have been rapidly deporting individuals, further emboldened through new rulings and executive orders. This occurs despite stays, appeals, motions, etc. being filed and awaiting decisions. I am asking that the previous processes be reinstated, for there to be a check on ICE power, and that The Brave 16 be released.
