I am writing as your constituent because I am deeply concerned by the increasing risk of the United States becoming involved in a broader military conflict with Iran without proper congressional authorization. Recent statements by President Trump, including a post on Truth Social threatening overwhelming military action against Iran if an assassination attempt is made against him, raise serious questions about the potential for unilateral military escalation. The Constitution gives Congress, not the President alone, the authority to declare war. Decisions that could place American service members in harm's way and commit our nation to another prolonged conflict must be subject to congressional oversight and debate. While the Senate has taken initial steps by advancing a War Powers resolution, more must be done. I urge you to take immediate action to reassert Congress's constitutional role by: • Passing binding War Powers restrictions that prohibit further military strikes, blockades, seizures, or expanded hostilities against Iran unless Congress explicitly authorizes them. • Rejecting additional funding for any unauthorized military conflict with Iran. Congress should not approve supplemental appropriations that could enable further escalation without congressional approval. • Holding emergency public hearings requiring administration officials to testify under oath about the mission's objectives, legal authority, potential risks, exit strategy, and any planned or threatened attacks on civilian infrastructure. • Prohibiting the use of federal funds for attacks on civilian infrastructure, including power grids, water systems, bridges, ports, hospitals, and other protected civilian facilities, except where consistent with U.S. law and international humanitarian law. • Preserving the ability of U.S. forces to defend themselves against imminent threats while preventing self-defense authorities from being used to justify an open-ended, unauthorized regional war. Congress has a constitutional duty to serve as a check on executive power, particularly when the nation faces the possibility of war. I urge you to publicly support these measures, work with your colleagues to advance them, and oppose any effort to expand military operations against Iran without explicit authorization from Congress. Please let me know what actions you intend to take to uphold Congress's constitutional responsibilities and prevent further unauthorized escalation. Thank you for your time and your service.
