I write after reading a recent report (from Austin Kocher) on ICE's increasingly flagrant violation of its own policies against detaining and deporting pregnant and nursing women. I am horrified by the murderous intent that has to lie behind such violations. Pregnant and nursing mothers have been denied access to adequate food, water, and medical care. This inevitably imposes life-threatening harms on their unborn children and infants. I know your power is currently limited by being in the minority. But this issue has the same graphic and emotional power that the images of kids in cages did during Trump's first presidential term. Every American deserves to know and all of us should be forced to confront the reality of ICE's despicable and inhuman treatment of these mothers, including both citizens and non-citizen immigrants. I urge you to make this a central issue and do whatever is in your power to help these suffering women. (And ultimately, I hope you will support abolishing ICE, which has proven itself to be a dangerous and unlawful paramilitary organization antithetical to American democracy and freedom.)
