It appears that the President has the authority to impose tariffs unilaterally only under specific conditions, such as national security emergency. What is the national security reason declared on over 100 countries, including uninhabited islands? I want a specific answer to this question. The International Emergency Economic Powers Act does give the President very specific power for national security but tariffs on our allies and very small nations is nonsensical. Moreover, instant tariff changes and exemptions leads us to believe these were not seriously considered in the first place. This non-serious process violates the Constitution’s separation of powers. Congress has the sole authority to control tariffs and these statutes, passed by Congress, should not be ignored. When national security authority is declared, Congress should know exactly what and why. I want very specific answers as to this declared national security.
