Ban Presidential Stock Trading and Financial Self-Dealing

To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A verified voter in Pasadena, CA

August 24

Pass legislation that explicitly bans the president from trading stocks, profiting from foreign investments, or licensing their name for personal gain while in office. The current stock trading ban moving through Congress was deliberately stripped of presidential restrictions to win Republican votes — that loophole needs to close, not stay open. Trump made over 1,000 trades in June alone, buying at least $49 million in securities and selling at least $28.5 million. He traded hundreds of stocks in April 2025, days before announcing the tariffs that shook global markets. His family's wealth grew by $2 billion in 2025 — more than three times what his businesses earned the prior year as a private citizen. The White House calls this "no conflict of interest." Most Americans disagree, and polls back that up. No president should be able to move markets with policy decisions while personally holding positions that benefit from those same decisions. If existing law doesn't cover it, write a new one. This is exactly the kind of corruption the public is watching Congress to act on.
